Computers Instead Of Teachers Essay

Is it possible that computers replace teachers? There is a huge discussion on this question. There are many researchers or enthusiasts who claim that computer-based learning will replace teachers. There are also people who disagree with computers replacing teachers. Both sides have clear opinions and it is not so easy for us to help students choose the way of studying. Meanwhile, many schools or cram schools introduce computers in classes recently. Which is more effective for students to be taught by computers or teachers?

Computers are helpful for students. Computers have many convenient functions. For instance, it is possible to finish works in shorter time than people do. As examples of the works, there are calculation, drawing up the exams, showing the results and so on. Also, Computers are becoming better at providing well-structured teaching materials and assessing student from their knowledge and skills. If students enter the results of exams or their weak points, computers can make decisions of students’ levels based on the data. Therefore, students can study at their own paces. They can choose the timing for studying the units which they want to focus on. Moreover, computers can take on more challenging tasks. That can be beneficial to deal with each student. That is why students can be motivated and improve their skills. Computers can help students study efficiently.

Teachers can communicate with students. Following are the examples. First, students are learning not only how to read and write, but also how to interact or communicate with others. Through the communication with teachers, students can learn the importance of human relationships. Second, teachers who are really enthusiastic about their jobs are able to inflame the interest in the subjects. Some students choose classes depend on teachers who are in charge of the subject. Students may be influenced by teachers who have a clear teaching method. Third, teachers can tell their experiences or opinions to students. If they want some advice, teachers can help them. In other words, teachers can play the role as advisors or counselors. Students need teachers in classes. Yutaka Matsuo, Associate professor of The University of Tokyo, says that computers will get even better at teaching, because they are good at information processing. However, it is teachers that can make students motivated, or talk with them about their future dreams and put their heads together.

There is one more thing that computers cannot do but teachers can do. Teachers are flexible. They keep their eyes on their students all the time in classes, so they can recognize students’ needs. Of course, both teachers and computers create or prepare the teaching materials and instructions. However, teachers can change and arrange the suitable materials for students. It can be done thanks to the relationship of mutual trust.

Computers have great possibilities in the classroom. By using them, students may study effectively. However, teachers are more valuable for many reasons. Human relationship is more meaningful than man-machine relationship. In my opinion, teachers can use computers if they need to support students with study. The most important thing and what I want to say is that balance of two sides is essential. Computers in the classroom should be an addition, not a replacement for teachers.

There is an onslaught of technology on the modern classroom. Teachers, administrators, parents, and students alike are being told that technology is the whetstone with which we can all sharpen our education system. Technology can open doors, expand minds, and change the world.

That may be true, but it's not the panacea that it's been made out to be. As much innovation as the iPad may bring to the classroom, it's not going to replace a teacher anytime soon. In fact, the influx of technology like iPads means there is a greater need for teachers. We need teachers who are part early adopter, part integrator, and part mad scientist. The modern teacher must be willing to take chances and able to figure out how not just how technology works, but how it works for each student, and where its use is most appropriate.

There is a problem, however. When someone mentions using technology in education, the conversation shifts away from education and pedagogy, and transforms into dreams of shiny new gizmos and gadgets filling our classrooms. That's a problem - It's not about the technology. Rather, the sleek and ever more powerful devices that are coming down the pipeline are simply one part of a teacher's toolkit. The technology is not the lesson, it is there to enhance the lesson.

A classroom with one iPad or one laptop for every student may offer opportunities that a classroom with one computer for the teacher to use does not. But technology in such abundance is not education's magic bullet. Instead of having an all-technology-all-the-time classroom, teachers should leverage the technology when it can ameliorate the lesson. You can flip your classroom without relying solely on technology. Project-based learning activities don't have to happen in totally tech driven environments.

Our classrooms are changing, and without a doubt they will look quite different in five or ten years than they do today. New technologies are being developed quickly, and with so many different trends taking hold, it is yet to be seen what will be shaken out and what will stick. Will MOOCs or a similar online learning concept start to take over? Will we have robots for teachers?

One thing we feel strongly about: teachers aren't going anywhere. Whatever word you choose - teacher, tutor, preceptor, or something else - the role a teacher plays in the classroom is huge. Everyone knows this on a personal level, and can identify a teacher or mentor who has had influence on us or changed our trajectories in a positive way.

Teachers are not, and cannot be automatons handing out information to students. They are leaders, guides, facilitators, and mentors. They encourage students when they struggle, and inspire them to set and reach for their goals. They are role models, leading by example and giving direction when necessary. A computer can give information, but a teacher can lend a hand, or an ear, and discern what's necessary for a student to succeed, and to want to succeed.

So yes, technology is going to play a critical role in the future of education. But not as big a role as that of a teacher.
